Today marks California’s first Pacific Leatherback Turtle Conservation Day. But while leatherbacks are being honored on land, they’re being drowned under the water.
Along
the coast, mile-long fishing nets called “drift gillnets” are catching
and suffocating some members of California’s most endangered turtle
species. The gillnet fishery is set to expand in the next year
– which means more turtles could die in these lethal nets. We’ve got to
make state and federal officials think twice before signing a death
warrant on a state symbol.
