Leatherback Turles Endangered by Drift Nets

Today marks California’s first Pacific Leatherback Turtle Conservation Day. But while leatherbacks are being honored on land, they’re being drowned under the water.

Along the coast, mile-long fishing nets called “drift gillnets” are catching and suffocating some members of California’s most endangered turtle species. The gillnet fishery is set to expand in the next year – which means more turtles could die in these lethal nets. We’ve got to make state and federal officials think twice before signing a death warrant on a state symbol.
