Read Before You Buy Flat Screen TV!

Just when we think things may be getting better, we discover that a chemical used in making flat-screen televisions is a green house gas 17,000 times stronger than CO2! Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) has a life of 740 years.

Read article on Grist or just glance at the quoted abstract below.

From the abstract at Geophysical Research Letters
Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) can be called the missing greenhouse gas: It is a synthetic chemical produced in industrial quantities; it is not included in the Kyoto basket of greenhouse gases or in national reporting under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC); and there are no observations documenting its atmospheric abundance. . . With 2008 production equivalent to 67 million metric tons of CO2, NF3 has a potential greenhouse impact larger than that of the world's largest coal-fired power plants. . .

This is too bad. I don't know about it and own that flat tv. It's late for now. Does it applied to Flat screen monitor (cumputer/laptop/tablet pc) as well?

I read about this as well. It is disgusting that the television manufacturers have known about it but chose to use it anyway because of the profit potential. Thank you for writing about it and bringing attention to it. How many people would not have bought one of those televisions had they known before hand? We have to get the word out!

For once it is great that flat screened TV's are exceptionally expensive in South Africa so few can afford then. I certainly cannot as a retired person.

What an education you are giving me. This is horrible to take in but necessary.

Thanks so much for the recommendation. I have not explored this part of entrecard but will. You are educating me this way, too--as always. Thank you so much, friend.

Wow. This is the first I have heard of this. Interesting that it hasn't gotten much press. And by interesting I mean suspicious.

That's scary, especially since after February next year, that's the only kind of tv (flat screen) that will be made anymore. :/

Dropping by from entrecard, I was surprised learning that flat screen TV is bad. I have planned to buy it but I guess now I will never think of having it. Thanks for the great post!

While posting a issue like this, try to add a link at the end of the post, which would give a detailed information on the issue... It would also help as a reference... It's really hard to believe....

I would like to apologize... Honestly i didn't notice the "article on grist" hyperlinked...
I read the article just now...

I guess there is not much awareness about the issue... When i googled it for more details i did not get much...

Anyway thanks for sharing the valuable information...
