Make Your Own Dish Soap

I use vinegar and baking soda for most cleaning, but have not found anything to use on dishes. For anyone else who has worried about the toxic components of dish soap, learn how to make organic dish soap in this article:

How To Make Dish Soap | How To Do Things.com

Now, if I can find something for the automatic dishwasher, I will be almost totally green when cleaning.

I learned about the How To Do Things website when reading:

A test of six green dish soaps | By Katharine Wroth | Grist | The Bottom Line | 17 Jun 2008

This article made me crazy. How can brands claim to be organic, when they contain a toxic chemical? I wonder who decides, "Hey, lets add some of this toxic chemical to the mix. We can still call it organic." I mean, sulfuric acid occurs in nature, but I would not put it on my dishes.

AUUUUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHH!*

* The sound of frustrated environmentalist activisit howl!

I use laundry balls in the washing machine. Mine last about a year and are very eco friendly.

I also use vinegar and baking soda for cleaning. I got one of those little hand held steam cleaners as well which is great for all those little corners you can't reach and grouting on tiles.

@jackie-So those laundry balls work? Do you use any soap at all?

@mark-thanks for stopping by.

What are laundry balls???

Kudos to you for making your own soap in an effort to be more eco friendly. I have been making similar changes.

Feels a little strange making soap though, ever seen Fight Club?

With the laundry balls they state you can put a teaspoon of washing powder if articles very dirty but I have never needed to do that. I also find I don't need softener which is great as most pollute our water.

@manyo-No, I haven't seen Fight Club. Something tells me I do not want to know, but what is it?

@jackie-Can you wash in cold water?

I always use cold water to save electricity and they work fine.

I haven't tried them with extremely dirty things like mens overalls but even if only used for normal washing you save a fortune on detergents and help save our water system.

Thank for all your valuable comments! I never used to care about what type of soap I use, but now I know that not all soap is created equal. After reading article about all kinds of dangerous toxins used in soaps I switched to 100% natural soap, and I fell in love with it. My skin never felt better! Rose Geranium is one of my favorite scents!
