More Poisons in Your Home

Every parent should read Playing With Fire, a series on toxic flame retardants in the Chicago Tribune.  Chemicals in flame retardants have been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption and neurological deficiency. According to the writers,
The average American baby is born with . . . the highest recorded levels of flame retardants among infants in the world.

A common flame retardant is Firemaster 550, which contains TBPH, which is structurally similar to a phthalate called DEHP that is linked to health problems.

This series exposes how flame retardant manufacturers deliberately misrepresent the "science" of flame retardant chemicals, emphasizing their effectiveness and downplaying the health risks of use.  For examples of this whitewashing, see American Chemistry website.

We need stricter oversight of toxic chemicals. Last month, hundreds of moms, nurses, labor leaders, and other concerned citizens rolled on the national capitol for the National Stroller Brigade for Safer Chemicals.
