Greenwashing the sins of the world

Everyone has heard the term, whitewashing; usually in a political context. Greenwashing is the same process, but with an environmental twist.

Greenwashing: When a company spends more time, money and resources running marketing campaigns to convince the public that the company is clean and green than they spend implementing environmentally friendly practices.

EnviroMedia has put together the Greenwashing Index and set up a site where you may find more information on greenwashing. What is truly awesome is that you may also submit and vote on the advertisements that have made you steaming mad in the past. Exxon, Chevy and Chevron are a few that just come to my mind. Oh, yes, and those #@!$ clean coal commercials!

Consumers must educate themselves on what makes environmental claims are truthful and which are BS. Usually my BS buzzer sounds about 10 seconds into a green commercial by an oil company, but that may just be my cynical nature!

It is fun to vote on the bad ads at greenwashingindex.com. Join me. Let me know what you think and if you submit any advertisements.
