One solution is Nike's Reuse-a-Shoe program, where worn-out athletic shoes of any brand are collected, processed and recycled into material used in sports surfaces like basketball courts, tennis courts, athletic fields, running tracks and playgrounds for youth around the world.
Since it began, Reuse-A-Shoe has expanded from the USA to include Canada, U.K., Netherlands, Germany, Australia and Japan. Please help turn your old sneakers into places to play.
Drop-Off Locations are available in the USA, Europe, Japan, Australia

What a cool program! I had no idea this existed. It's great especially since running shoes are sometimes even too worn out to give to charity, and if that's the case, then this program is perfect. Thanks for letting us know about it!
I think this idea is very good. There are a lot of people out there especially in countries that are highly-stricken by poverty, who have never even experienced wearing a pair of shoes. Their soles bear extreme heat and cold without having any cover or protection. This project has a very noble cause and I commend Nike for coming up with such good idea.
