Make Your Own Dish Soap

I use vinegar and baking soda for most cleaning, but have not found anything to use on dishes. For anyone else who has worried about the toxic components of dish soap, learn how to make organic dish soap in this article:

How To Make Dish Soap | How To Do Things.com

Now, if I can find something for the automatic dishwasher, I will be almost totally green when cleaning.

I learned about the How To Do Things website when reading:

A test of six green dish soaps | By Katharine Wroth | Grist | The Bottom Line | 17 Jun 2008

This article made me crazy. How can brands claim to be organic, when they contain a toxic chemical? I wonder who decides, "Hey, lets add some of this toxic chemical to the mix. We can still call it organic." I mean, sulfuric acid occurs in nature, but I would not put it on my dishes.

AUUUUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHH!*

Daily Grist : McCain and Big Oil

Oil Together Now
McCain talks energy on the campaign trail; Obama endorsed by Gore

While campaigning last week, presidential candidate John McCain laid out energy ideas galore. In a big energy speech, McCain called for lifting the federal ban on offshore drilling, and also boosted renewables and conservation. McCain also released a new climate-focused ad aiming to distance himself from President Bush -- just before Bush also called for lifting the offshore-drilling moratorium. Also in speeches last week, McCain called for 45 new nuclear reactors in the U.S. by 2030, more flex-fuel vehicles, equal federal support to all forms of ethanol, better enforcement of existing fuel-efficiency standards, and a $300 million prize for a drastically improved electric car battery. For his part, Barack Obama last week called for closer regulation of oil speculators, criticized McCain's offshore-drilling shift, and secured the endorsement of the Sierra Club, United Steelworkers, and Al Gore.

Green is New Red White & Blue

Read full article here: Green Consumer Demographics - eMarketer

I recycle everything that I may: CFLs, batteries, oil, printer cartridges, glass, metal, aluminum, plastic (1 & 2), cardboard and paper. I compost all organic matter and yard waste. I hate to admit it, but I still have to put out a trash can each week for pickup.

Do you feel that your green behaviors fit the demographic and is fairly represented in the chart above?

Car Runs on Water

Pour any type of water into the tank and an energy generator takes hydrogen from the water and releases electrons that power the engine. A liter of water runs the car at a speed of 80 kph for about an hour. If you carry enough water or can get it along the way, you will be able to drive forever.

Tip of the hat to: Read My Mind Blog
a WATER-POWERED CAR is finally a reality!

Expanding Dead Zone in Gulf of Mexico

NASA satellite image of sediments from Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers emptying into Gulf.

What is the Dead Zone?

Oxygen deprived (hypoxic) conditions in the Gulf of Mexico have been recorded since the 1970s. Each spring, nutrient rich waters from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers empty into the Gulf of Mexico.

This freshwater layer, less dense than salt water, floats on top of the salt water, separating the oxygen in the air from the oxygen-depleted water on the bottom of the Gulf. The resulting Dead Zone lasts from early spring to the hurricane season, when hurricanes and tropical storms whisk away the freshwater layer and churn up water from the bottom of the Gulf.

Is the Dead Zone Growing?

What was once an every-2-to-3-year event soon became an annual occurrence. Last year, the Dead Zone was the size of Massachusetts.

Source: Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force. 2008. Gulf Hypoxia Action Plan 2008 for Reducing, Mitigating, and Controlling Hypoxia in the Northern Gulf of Mexico and Improving Water Quality in the Mississippi River Basin. Washington, DC.
This March, researchers found regions of low-oxygen around coastal Louisiana. As the runoff from spring crop planting has made its way down the Mississippi, these regions have been growing.

Gulf Dead Zone Likely to Set Record - US News and World Report
In May, the team of scientists, which includes researchers from Louisiana State University and the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, found that nitrogen loading in the Gulf was 37 percent higher this year than in May 2007. The level was the highest since researchers began taking measurements in 1970.
What Causes the Dead Zone to Grow?

Flooding

The massive floods of June in the Mississippi watershed will dump more nutrients into the Gulf than ever before.

Non-Source Point Pollution
  • Farmers, spurred by demands for ethanol, have been planting corn and soybeans like crazy. The use of fertilizer has increased as more land is put into crop production. The runoff from farmland contains nitrogen and flows into the watershed.
  • Aging sewerage treatment plants leak human nutrients into the water supply.
  • Decaying infrastructure like levees and dams give way, allowing flood waters to wash away septic tanks, soil, hazardous waste, cars, cows and houses.
What is Happening to the Dead Zone Now?

Flood waters loaded with nutrients are now on the way to the Gulf of Mexico. This nutrient-rich freshwater layer provides a perfect environment for an overgrowth of phytoplankton. Plankton consume oxygen as they live, then the planktonic remains and their waste products fall to the Gulf floor, where they are eaten by bacteria. As the bacteria feed, they consume more oxygen, creating oxygen-deprived conditions.
Hypoxic waters appear normal on the surface, but on the bottom, they are covered with dead and distressed animal, and in extreme cases, layers of stinking, sulfur- oxidizing bacteria, which cause the sediment in these areas to turn black. These hypoxic conditions cause food chain alterations, loss of biodiversity, and high aquatic species mortality (www.tulane.edu/~bfleury/envirobio/enviroweb/DeadZone.htm)
Why Should We Care about the Dead Zone?

What does the Dead Zone mean to us? Below are just a few areas of impact that I can foresee, and I am no expert.
  • The Gulf of Mexico provides about 40 percent of the nation's seafood. Already there are problems with the toxicity of shellfish and oysters in the Gulf. Expect problems with the shrimp.
  • Fishing is a multi-million dollar industry in the Gulf of Mexico. If there are no fish, shrimp or shellfish, there will be massive economic impacts. From the small fisherman who feeds his family to the shrimping fleets that fill the harbors, life will change.
  • Blooms of phytoplankton kill fish which will wash up on the beaches of the Gulf. Beaches will close, tourism dollars will leave the area, devastating local economies.
  • Birds and other creatures higher on the food chain will die, either from eating toxic fish, oysters and shellfish or from starvation. Annual migrations of birds will become disasters. The birding tourism market will collapse.
  • Increased health problems for those living in coastal areas. Imagine the smell of the algae blooms and the dead fish.
What is the Solution?

Unfortunately, we do not have an EASY button for this issue that we may "click to take action." This is the time for sustainable farming, wetlands restoration, innovative water treatment and a lot of elbow grease. Until recently, there were just a few organizations like the Sierra Club, the Gulf Restoration Network and Gulf Base to help us find the answers.

In June 2008, The Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force released the Gulf Hypoxia Action Plan 2008 for Reducing, Mitigating, and Controlling Hypoxia in the Northern Gulf of Mexico and Improving Water Quality in the Mississippi River Basin.
Eleven key actions in the 2008 Action Plan outline critical needs to complete and implement nitrogen and phosphorus reduction strategies, promote effective conservation practices and management practices, track progress, reduce existing scientific uncertainties, and promote effective communications to increase awareness of Gulf hypoxia.
EPA Requests Grant Proposals to Reduce Hypoxic Zone in Gulf of Mexico | Newsroom | US EPA

The Environmental Protection Agency put out a request for proposals (RFP) to:
. . . use water quality trading programs to reduce nutrient loads, particularly from the Ohio River, the Upper Mississippi River, or the Lower Mississippi River.
What Can We Do to Help?

Write or call your representatives, both state and federal, and let them know how important this issue is to you, a registered voter and a concerned citizen of the US.

For readers outside the USA, it is estimated that there are 200 dead zones in the oceans of the world. This is a global problem. For more information please see the NASA Ocean Color site.

Polar Bears Need Help Again

Polar Bear and Cub
Last month the current administration was forced to recognize the seriousness of the threat to polar bear survival from global warming. Polar Bears were added to the Endangered Species list.

However, the administration refuses to address the effects of global warming on the rapidly melting sea ice and allows environmentally damaging oil and gas development to continue in the Arctic.

US Representatives Jay Inslee and Maurice Hinchey have introduced a bill to halt oil and gas leases in the bears' Arctic habitat until scientists can fully assess the environmental impacts and designate protected critical habitat.

Click to support the "Polar Bear Seas Protection Act" and ensure that polar bears get the protection they need to survive.

Save the Tongass National Forest

Tongass
..it is densely forested down to the waters edge with trees that never seem to have suffered from thirst or fire or the axe of the lumberman... – John Muir, Travels in Alaska, 1915

The Tongass is the largest National Forest in the USA. Tongass encompasses 17 million acres of mountains, glaciers, rivers, bogs, forest and fjords. This Alaskan rain forest is the last remnant of temperate rain forest on Earth.

Located in southeast Alaska, The Tongass National Forest is home to wild salmon, grizzly bears, bald eagles and wolves. This pristine area covers millions of acres of lush, ancient forests and healthy watersheds, unmarked by roads or man.

The current administration recently adopted a new management plan for the Tongass that will open 2.3 million acres of this pristine forest to logging, road building and development.

Stop this land grab! Visit the Center for Biological Diversity and take action by June 30!

Quick Grist

As of May 30, average gas prices were $3.96 in the United States, $8.31 in Britain, $9.66 in France, and $11.49 in Germany. It takes $1000 to fill up a diesel 18-wheeler in the USA.

Hell Nay! We Won't Pay! | Grist | News | 11 Jun 2008
Truck drivers and transportation operators have threatened to strike, gone on strike, or are still striking in Britain, France, Hong Kong, India, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, South Korea, Spain, and Thailand. In some places truckers have quit the roads altogether, while others are driving at a crawl and snarling traffic.
I have been wondering when our truckers were going to strike. It may be time for a convoy.

Diesel Generators and Global Warming

Flood, tornado, snowstorm, wild fire, mud slide, earthquake, cyclone, tsunami . . . did I miss a catastrophe that happened during the past year? We may argue about the cause, but the basic fact remains that the climate IS changing.

My thoughts are that global warming is altering the climate of the world and we must be prepared to deal with highly volatile and quickly changing weather patterns. Global temperature is predicted to increase by 3 degrees C (5.4 degrees F), with nights and winter becoming warmer.

The resultant melting of ice and expansion of the oceans will cause the sea level to rise by 500 mm (20 inches). All around the world, islands at sea level are being abandoned due to rising water levels. By 2050, 70 million people in China, 30 million in Bangladesh and 1000s of Americans in Florida and Louisiana will be displaced by rising water.

Storms and floods will become more frequent and more powerful. Some areas of the world will experience heavier rain and snowfall while other locales will be decimated by drought. Warmer seas mean an increase in the intensity of hurricanes and cyclones. Deserts will expand and forest fires will rage out of control. In the US, California will undergo a severe drought.

In southern Canada and northern USA, rainfall will increase and snowfall will decrease. While in the tropics and subtropics, rainfall will decrease causing increased desertification. Glaciers, which contain much of the world's freshwater supply, will disappear by 2025, with resultant threat to drinking water, irrigation and hydro power in countries like Peru and Bolivia.

In any emergency, the first sign is usually loss of power. This means no electricity to run water treatment plants or to power water pumps that keep parts of our country from being underwater. Without power, the flood waters will recede gradually, presenting problems of disease and hygiene. Without power, municipal water supplies are left high and dry.

Instead of worrying about global warming, do something constructive to prepare for the times to come. Install a rainwater capture system, solar panels and wind generators. Take advantage of geothermal power and the insulating properties of earth. Buy a diesel generator that will allow you to keep your food from spoiling and power crucial appliances. Decide how you will obtain and purify water, deal with household waste and keep food on the table.

Once you are prepared, look to the neighborhood and the community. A large kubota diesel generator will keep many essential services working. Make sure the hospitals, shelters and emergency services have diesel generators. Ask them what will happen if the power fails?

You may have to live in the NOW, but you can prepare for the FUTURE.

Save Time, Money and Resources

I am always on the lookout for ways to save my time and our natural resources. I bank online, pay bills online and are paid online. I do not physically handle bills, stamps or money. It makes it easier to do my business and personal taxes because the data I use is in electronic format to be downloaded and manipulated through spreadsheet or statistical software. I calculate that I have saved 1000s of trees by doing business this way.

As a home-based business it is easy for me to do business this way. Larger businesses might have different requirements. However, if you would look at doing business electronically, you might be surprised at how easy it is . . .

Atlantic Global Business Solution includes several integrated modules for Planning and Resourcing, Time & Expense Tracking, Business Information Tracking, Risk Management and Contractor Management. This system is useful to small, medium and large businesses.

Atlantic Global's online Timesheet Billing Software and Expense Management system automates the entry, tracking, billing and reporting of the time and expenses of your employees and contractors. If you bill time and related expenses to your clients, this is a blessing.

E-mail notification will be sent to remind you to enter or to approve time sheet data. With this system, you will not have to prepare paper documentation of expenses or worry about getting approval signatures as the system includes automatic routing. Everything is automated and paperless.

After using Atlantic Global electronic web time sheet and tracking capabilities, you may still download and share this important information using tools with which you are most familiar, such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project, ERP, Oracle Project and iTime, SAP & Sybase, Peoplesoft and Crystal Decisions.

All Electric Uno Takes Top Award

Uno Photograph from Pop-Sci Website

Top 2008 Pop-Sci Invention Award

A 19-year old Canadian man named Ben Gulak developed the Uno. The two wheels are side by side directly under the rider, which gives the Uno stability. To accelerate, the rider leans forward (like a Segway). When cornering, the wheels move independently to keep the rubber on the road.

Robotics meets the blacktop with a gyroscope and balance integrated suspension system that keeps the rider over the wheels and the Uno on the road. Powered by two wheelchair batteries, the Uno should be able to reach 40 MPH.

This is a prototype. However, with some resources, this could be in production within 2 years.

Blog Blast for Peace : June 4, 2008

What started with one blogger and one blog has traveled from blog to blog across the globe until it reached 35 countries and 46 states. BlogBlast for Peace is a semi-annual blog event.

This is my Peace Globe in support of
Blog Blast for Peace, June 4, 2008.

This is the Prayer for Peace that
should be prayed every day
at noon, wherever you are.

May there only be peaceful and cheerful Earth Days
to come for our beautiful Spaceship Earth
as it continues to spin and circle in
frigid space with its warm and
fragile cargo of animate life.

United Nations Secretary-General U Thant spoke of Spaceship Earth on Earth Day March 21, 1971 at the ceremony of the ringing of the Japanese Peace Bell.

Who Will Host Your Next Domain?

Every time Blogger goes down, will not let me upload a file, or changes items you would not know about until you read the Blogger blog, I want to move my blogs. I have secured the Endangered Spaces blog domain, so is will probably move that blog next.

I was looking at webhostingchoice.com and they have the top ten choices listed on their comparison matrix (above). Unfortunately, there are not many differences between vendors.

HostMaster, StartLogic and Web Hosting Pad are priced the same, $4.95 per month with zero setup, and unlimited disk space and data transfer. Host Gator and 1&1 are also $4.95, but with restrictions on disk space and data transfer.

The next price grouping is $6.95 per month with free setup. InMotion Hosting, BlueHost, GoDaddy and Fast Domain are in this price range. InMotion hosting has restrictions on disk storage and data transfer of 1500 Gb for each per month. BlueHost and Fast Domain have no restrictions on storage or transfer. 1&1 has restrictions on both storage and transfer, 120 Gb and 1200 Gb, respectively. GoDaddy restricts storage to 100 Gb and transfer to 1000 Gb.

Yahoo! charges $11.95 per month for unlimited disk space and data transfer.

I believe the Best 10 Hosting Sites page is a great place to start looking for a hosting package. The top ten in order are listed above.

From there, you should look at the Browse by Specific Features, which are : Unix, Windows, No Setup, 24 Hour Support, JSP / Java VM, PHP, FrontPage, MySQL, MS SQL, Streaming Audio/Video, Dedicated IP, Mailing List, Python, ASP, SSL Miva Merchant/Empressa, Perl and Register Domains. If you click on any of these terms, you will be given a list of other hosts that offer these services. Unfortunately, with the bells and whistles come more fees and lesser rankings.

Good luck!
