Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy

Living in the moment was the message of The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. In his next book, A New Earth, Tolle expanded on the concept of NOW and recommended letting go of our ego-based state of consciousness.

By dissolving the self-centered state of being that leads to negativity, anger, jealousy and unhappiness, we awaken a new presence of awareness. With this awareness in the foreground of our consciousness, we may just be able to change the mass consciousness of the Earth.

As Hale Dwoskin, teacher of the Sedona Method, states:
Tolle’s book is literally a manifesto for bringing the presence that you are into manifestation on a planetary scale and thereby bringing a new earth into being.
Therefore, a New Earth meets The Secret (the Sedona Method), which has been effective in helping people let go of suffering, whether it be chronic pain, depression, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, money problems, addictive behaviors, relationship issues or anger.

The Sedona Method helps you to free yourself so that you may attract all that you desire. Letting go of negative and emotional thoughts and feelings actually helps you to feel all the joy, peace, happiness, wealth, and love that are your true nature.

Darfur Needs Our Help

If you want information on the never ending struggle of the people of Darfur, please view this post on Texas RV Travel blog.

The latest is that the United Nations World Food Program announced that it will cut half its food supplies to the people of Darfur because of a lack of funds and relentless attacks on its convoys. Millions in Darfur depend on this food supply. Without it, they will be pushed even closer to starvation. Inaction is not an option when so many lives are at stake.

Congress is preparing to vote on a bill that will include significant funding for peacekeeping and humanitarian aid in Darfur. Your representative needs to hear from you that the men, women, and children of Darfur cannot afford anymore delays.

Funding for Darfur can bring hope to the thousands who have weathered half a decade of genocide.

Please take action to help these people survive.

The Greening of Shangri-La

Shangri-La in Orange, Texas circa 1950
Inspired by the mystical retreat in the book Lost Horizon, H.J. Lutcher Stark sought to create his own haven of indescribable beauty where time would stand still. Blighted by a freak ice storm and destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, Shangri-La still exists today.
Shangri-La Gardens and Nature Center

Shangri La Gardens and Nature Center in Orange, Texas was awarded the U.S. Green Building Council's Platinum Certification for LEED®-New Construction. This is the first such award in Texas, one of only 50 such awards worldwide.

LEED Building Rating System

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ recognizes construction techniques that provide sustainability in five areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Architecture and Energy Efficiency

  • The architecture and the efficiency of equipment and lighting at Shangri-La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center reduce energy costs by 70 percent.

  • All buildings on site are oriented for passive solar heating and cooling.

  • Green construction techniques of the buildings include window placement with optimized overhangs and soybean based spray foam insulation in walls and ceilings.

  • The roof top rainwater collection system provides water for toilets and the irrigation system of the Orientation Center.

  • Shangri-La has a closed-loop, geothermal heating and cooling system, which uses the Earth as a giant insulator.

Recycle and Reclamation

The Earth-friendly development of Shangri-La used reclaimed brick 100 years old.

The ChoiceDek® boardwalks throughout Shangri-La used the equivalent plastic of 1.1 million milk jugs or 3.6 million plastic bags.

During construction, approximately 80 percent of the construction waste was diverted from landfill.

Sunken cypress trees were salvaged from rivers in Louisiana and used for siding, walls, fencing and gates.

The parking lot was built using reclaimed asphalt.

Reforestation and Restoration

Removal of invasive species and reintroduction of native plants and trees.

After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, more than 15,000 Long leaf Yellow Pines were planted.

Transportation

Almost one-half of all building materials were acquired from within a 500-mile radius of project site, thus reducing transportation costs and supporting the local economy.

Education

The Orientation Center includes exhibit hall, theater, classroom/greenhouse and water demonstration garden that shows how plants filter pollution from water.

Gardens

The Botanical Gardens feature more than 300 species of plants, including 41 varieties of azaleas. There are five artistic rooms and four sculpture gardens. The garden around the reflection pool, Pond of the Blue Moon, pays tribute to the original Shangri-La.

Nature Center

While in the Nature Center, visitors can view thousands of birds nesting in Ruby Lake or view the 1,200 year-old pond cypress tree. Eventually more interpretation will uncover all the wonder of the cypress/tupelo swamp.

Not Your Grandfather's Clock

water fountain clockAs Earth Day wanes, I dream of having an Earth room, an outside room with shade cloth ceiling and screens, comfortable furniture and a water feature. Shade cloth will screen the hot Texas sun and screens are a necessity as mosquitoes find me extremely tasty.

I cleared an area by our shed that is fairly level, shaded part of the day, yet has enough sun to grow honeybee-friendly plants and provide power to solar lights. I rescued some wicker furniture someone from a curbside and have repaired and painted the settee and table. Then, I found a perfect chair at Goodwill to match! Now, I just have to find the perfect cushions.

While searching for fountains, I saw a store that sells Howard Miller Grandfather Clocks. I thought to myself, what is this doing in the search engine results?" When I clicked through, I saw a Fountain Water Clock. It is gorgeous!

I never thought of myself as a grandfather clock type of person, but I read an article about how to Choose a Clock That Reflects Your Personality on their blog.

This clock definitely fits my personality and it is not your grandfather's clock. I love the natural slate and aged copper tower over which water cascades. The clock face is very simple, with Roman numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock, unadorned bar hour markers and copper-finished hands. The pendulum is of aged copper as well.

There is a light in the base and an electric submersible pump that I would replace or convert to solar power, but that is no problem as I have learned how to do this while researching water features. Everything is coming together for my Earth room. Now I just have to convince my husband to build it!

Earth Day 2008 : The Earth as Apple

Cut an apple into quarters. Put aside three of those quarters. These slices represent the oceans of our world.

What is left is 1/4. Slice it in half. Set aside one of the halves. This is the part of the Earth on which people cannot live, the poles, deserts, swamps and high mountains.

What is left is 1/8. This is where the humans live, but not necessarily where they grow their food.

Slice your 1/8 piece into four sections. Put aside three of them. What is left is 1/32. The three pieces you set aside represent the places where the soil is too poor to farm--too rocky, wet, cold or steep. These also represent the cities, homes, highways, shopping malls, schools, parks, factories, parking lots and golf courses where people live play and work--but do not grow food.

Take the 1/32 piece that remains. Carefully peel it. Look at this tiny scrap of apple peel. This represents the surface topsoil of the planet that may be farmed. This thin skin represents the thin skin on the Earth's crust upon which humankind totally depends. This soil is less than 5 feet deep and is a fixed amount of food-producing land.

Eat the rest of your apple, but save that tiny piece of apple skin. Treat is as if your life depends on it.

For more information on using this as a teaching tool, please visit this website.

Do You Like Cut Flowers?

There is a new video on YouTube that shows you how to get the most our of your cut flowers. The video is sponsored by Proflowers.

The flowers in the video are roses, but I think the tips would work well for most cut flowers. Something I did not know is that roses have guard leaves (2-3 tough outer leaves) that you should remove before arranging.

Fill the vase with water and add the plant food. Next, remove any leaves that would touch the water in the vase. Arrange flowers in a spiral formation, from the outside in. After three days you should replace the water and add another packet of plant food.

Maybe I should start leaving tips about Mother's Day and cut flowers now that I know how to care for them?

Our Third and Final Roof

In May of 2006, we had a hailstorm that hurled softball size hail down onto San Marcos, Texas. The roofs and the vehicles at the outlet mall and the car dealers located nearby were destroyed. People lost control of their cars as their windshields exploded and they were faced with flying glass and ice. Chucks of ice knocked people unconscious as they ran for cover.

At our home, we had no warning. The hail sounded like thunder. As the size of the hail grew, from pea size to baseball size, the sound became more like gunshots as it hit our travel trailer and cars. One by one, the windshields on our cars cracked and then failed. All the roof vents, the air conditioner, the TV antenna, the gravel guard and finally, the roof on our travel trailer gave way beneath the weight of the hail.

We lost windows, gutters, the outside component of our air conditioner, lawn furniture, a metal storage shed, and most of our roof. The shingles on our roof just shattered under the impact of the hail. Then the hail went through the underlayment and the wood of the roof deck, to rest upon the insulation in the attic. Then the hail melted and destroyed some of our ceilings in the house. What a mess!

This was the second roof we had lost on our home. The first time was due to high winds. This time, we were determined that we were not going to replace the roof again in our lifetimes. I did some research and found the shingle I wanted. The GAF-Elk Premium Designer Shingle exceeds all industry performance standards. Every GAF-Elk Premium Designer Shingle includes a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty against defects.

When we read of the Smart Choice® protection--non-prorated reimbursement for replacement materials and labor to install the roof for the first ten years AND 110 mph wind coverage-- we decided this was the shingle for us.

Today the roof is beautiful, our home insurance is discounted, and we no longer worry about hail and wind damage each time it rains. As an added bonus, the shingle color we chose reflects a lot of the sunlight and we have noticed an insulating effect we did not expect.

So, if you need a new roof, Explore GAF Roofing Options! For a few dollars more, get the peace of mind a high-grade roof provides.

Autism in USA : Thimerosal Generation

Thimerosal Generation

The first time I heard about the danger of mercury in vaccines was when I saw Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on The Daily Show about a year ago (2007). RFK, Jr. discussed the causal link between vaccines laced with thimerosal and increased rates of autism, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, speech and language delays, and other childhood neurological disorders. In fact, children born from 1989 to 2003 are referred to as the Thimerosal Generation.

Watching the show and listening to RFK, Jr. talk about mercury in vaccines, I felt as if I had been hit in the stomach. Then, after considering that the pharmaceutical industry is every bit as powerful as the oil and gas industry in the USA, I was physically ill. I did not want to believe that pharmaceutical companies would poison our young, but I knew that, in all probability, our young were being sacrificed to the god of pharma, just like our wilderness areas are currently being sacrificed to the god of oil and gas.

My Story

You see, my son was born in November of 1989 and is part of the Thimerosal Generation. He has learning differences (processing difficulties) that have plagued him since birth.

He did not talk by the age of two years old, so I had his hearing tested at the State School for the Deaf in Austin, where he was diagnosed as being profoundly deaf in both ears. After a brainstem auditory evoked response test, something I would not have known about if my sister did not work for an ENT specialist, his hearing was found to be perfect.

This was the beginning in a series of assessments that would continue until he was twelve years old and diagnosed with processing difficulties by the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic at Texas State University.

Luckily, I had the money to purchase, and the ability to administer, a software program that trained his eyes, ears and brain to work together. It took about four months, but the results were as if a switch was thrown in his brain. He began reading and learning at an appropriate grade level and school was not such a struggle.

To this day, he has test anxiety and I believe it is due to be subjected to batteries of testing as a young boy. He graduated high school a year early and is now attending college.

Autism in America

My son's story has a happy ending; not so for the million of other children, born between 1989 and 2003 in the USA. Of these, 1 in 166, or 1 in 80 boys, have been diagnosed with autism. In addition, 1 in 6 children were diagnosed with a related neurological disorder. A decade before, the rate was 1 in 2500 children. What changed?

Vaccinations Increased

Before 1989, preschoolers received only three vaccinations, comprised of up to eleven injections: DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), polio, and MMR (measles/mumps/rubella). In the early 1990s, hepatitis B, DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis) and Hib (Haemophilus Influenzae type b) were added. Next, it was made law that hepatitis B vaccination be given to newborns within 24 hours of birth.

Mercury Poisoning

All these vaccines were tainted with thimerosal. The ethyl mercury released from thimerosal is a known toxin. If a six-month-old child was administered the shots on schedule, they received a dose of mercury that was 87 times more than allowed under existing safety standards. In fact, most of the 95+ symptoms of autism are identical to the symptoms of mercury poisoning, including hand-wagging and toe walking. The hepatitis B vaccination is given within 24 hours of birth, when the brain is most sensitive to neurotoxins.

Controversy

If mercury is to blame, why did not ALL children who were vaccinated develop autism or other neurogical disorders? Many children are genetically deficient in their capacity to produce glutathione, an antioxidant that helps remove mercury from the body. This is no problem unless they are exposed to massive doses of mercury.

Are the Children Safe Now?

Thimerosal in children’s vaccines was decreased beginning in 1999, but it was not removed from most until late 2002 and early 2003. Many vaccines still contain thimerosal, including Chiron’s and Aventis’ pediatric flu vaccines as well as meningitis, diphtheria and tetanus given as boosters at age 11.

Conspiracy

From the research report:
During the 1990s, there were a significant number of reports filed into VAERS (The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) from doctors, public health regulators, and parents of children whose autism seemed directly linked to the vaccines. In response, in the autumn of 1999, the CDC asked its employee Thomas Verstraeten to perform the first large study of over 100,000 American kids whose vaccine and medical records were stored in CDC’s Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD). Verstraeten provoked alarm within the vaccine industry community when his data showed clear causative links between thimerosal and neurological damage, including autism. “The harm,” Verstraeten observed, “is done in the first month of life by thimerosal in vaccines.”
What followed is very similar to the tobacco industry's attempts to cover up the causal link between smoking and cancer. Researchers were told what their findings should be, researchers studied European studies not relevant to levels of mercury in the vaccines given in the US, data was manipulated and lost, and even the Department of Homeland Security became involved. You may read it in the research report by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

Continuing Problem

In 1999, the federal government began purchasing tens of millions of dollars of vaccines that contain thimerosal for export to developing countries. At that time autism was virtually unknown in the developing world. As would be expected, rates of autism in these countries skyrocketed.

Our Government at Work

Parents and interested individuals, PLEASE download and read RFK Jr.'s original research paper: Tobacco Science and the Thimerosal Scandal (PDF).

Read of the horror of a scandal that should have rocked our nation, but was covered up by pharmaceutical companies, disreputable researchers and members of our government.

It is a story of greed, cover up and complete disregard for our most precious resource, our children. You will be shocked and sickened, but you should be aware.

This post is made in support of Autism Awareness Month.

Thinking Back in Time Today

Over 40 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated and this nation lost one of the greatest leaders for peace and justice that we have ever known. Dr. King's words still resonate with reason decades later; they still inspire new generations of folks to action.

:: + :: :: + :: :: + :: :: + :: :: + :: :: + :: :: + ::

"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom."

"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word."

"The time is always right to do what is right."

God bless you, Dr. King. I am glad you lived during my lifetime. I wish your journey could have lasted longer. I wish you were alive today to guide our nation and our people.

Protect Our Rights, Our Heritage & Our Wildlife

On April 1, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced that the Bush Administration will waive environmental and land use laws along 470 miles of the USA/Mexico border.

If you live in a state that borders Mexico, please call your representative and deliver this simple message:
My name is ______________ and I’m calling from ________ to voice my shock and outrage about the Bush Administration’s announcement today that it will waive important environmental and land use laws along 470 miles of the U.S./Mexico border. This flagrant abuse of power threatens border communities and wildlife. I urge you to do everything in your power to challenge this awful decision.
Find your representatives and their phone numbers by clicking here.

Back in March, Defenders of Wildlife and The Sierra Club filed a petition asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear its argument on the abuses of the authority of the executive branch. They allege that this abuse is a violation of the Constitution’s separation of powers provision. Read about this important action here.

Secretary Chertoff has already waived 19 laws intended to protect public health, wildlife and endangered species, clean air and water, and historic and archaeological sites to move forward with construction of the border wall. In some places, the only access to water is being blocked by this accursed wall. Please take action.

Environmentalists are suing EPA

The Environmental Defense Fund has joined a slate of 12 states and 10 non-profit organizations to file suit to require the EPA to comply with the Supreme Court's decision and issue its determination within 60 days.
