Surfing for Peace
I saw the video of this story on the news the other day. I went looking for it to share. I did not find the video, but below is the wonderful story about how one Jewish man, a retired 87-year old doctor and world-class surfer, took peace into his own hands . . .

Thank you for writing to the Greens Members of Parliament with your concerns about Gunns' proposed pulp mill. The Greens are also strongly opposed to this development, and to the undemocratic fast-track approval process underpinning it. The four Greens Members of the House of Assembly have been consistently speaking out against the proposal in Parliament, and will be voting against the mill today.

Would You Like to Vontoo?
Vontoo voice messaging is the latest tool for environmentalist activists to broadcast a call to action to other advocates. Using Vontoo does not require any additional hardware or software, and you are able to reach anyone with a cell phone or land line in the USA.
Using voice over Internet protocol, you may easily record your personal voice message, send it to as many people as you have permission for, and track the results. You may direct your listener to take action by using Vontoo's "press 1" option to transfer them directly to the office of their elected officials or other entities.
Vontoo is a permission-based, on-demand voice messaging system. You either have a call opt-in mechanism on your web site or have an established relationship with the call recipient. Vontoo will also keep you out of trouble with the U.S. Do Not Call Registry, too.
Recently, the House and Senate Diabetes Caucuses circulated a letter in support of increased funding for Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) wanted to evoke bipartisan support for this important initiative. JDRF set the goal of persuading 50 senators and 218 representatives to sign the letter.
JDRF used Vontoo’s automated calling technology via the Internet, scheduling and then broadcasting a call to action to thousands of its grassroots supporters. Using the "press 1" option offered by Vontoo technology, 17 percent of the JDRF advocates were transferred to the office of their representative to voice their support. As a result, 65 Senators and 262 Representatives added their names to the funding letter.
Vontoo, sponsor of this post, is an incredible time, energy and resource saver! More efficient than email, less expensive than the US mail, voice messaging broadcasts are the wave of the future. So, would you like to Vontoo?

Protect the Salmon-Challis National Forest
Nestled in remote East-Central Idaho, the Salmon-Challis National Forest contains some of the wildest country in Idaho.
Home to bighorn sheep, gray wolves, salmon, steelhead, and sage-grouse, this area is also an important migration corridor connecting the greater Yellowstone Ecosystem to the Northern Rockies Ecosystem.
The US Forest Service is going to open wild areas of the forest, including areas proposed for wilderness protection, to dirt bikes, ATVs, and other off road vehicles.
The highest and best use of this forest is for wildlife protection, especially now, as species face growing environmental threats due to climate change.
Read about this area on The Valleys of Lewis's River on the Discover Lewis and Clark website.

Biodiesel Troubles in Texas
We purchased a used diesel truck today. I was so excited because it gets 2x the mileage of our current van. I planned to buy a diesel so that we could use biodiesel. Then, tonight, I see this article:
Concerns over air quality could sink biodiesel sales in Texas - Austin Business Journal
Concerns over air quality could sink biodiesel sales in Texas - Austin Business Journal
Biodiesel's NOx emissions came to the forefront Nov. 1, 2005, after TCEQ issued a rule for its Texas Low Emission Diesel program, or TxLED. The TxLED rule mandated, in part, reformulated diesel fuels that are less polluting. TCEQ in a subsequent clarification indicated biodiesel wasn't compliant with TxLEDI will be keeping an eye on this issue. Texas is the ONLY state that has taken this action. If biofuel suppliers cannot convince TCEQ that their products do not emit more NOx emissions by 12/31/2007, the fuel will not be used in the eastern counties of Texas where air quality is poor.

Eye of the Dolphin Movie Opens Today!
~ Eye of the Dolphin opens August 24th ~
Carly Schroeder, Adrian Dunbar, George Harris, Jane Lynch, Christine Adams and Academy Award nominee Katharine Ross star in a new movie this summer called Eye of the Dolphin. This movie is a great movie for tween and teen girls, but is a movie the entire family can enjoy. View the trailer below.
According to the critics, it is an award-winning movie with real depth that deals with the issues that young adults face. From the trailer, I would hazard an opinion that this movie will be best viewed on the big screen.
If you visit the Eye of the Dolphin website, you can register to win free tickets from a theater in your town.

British Gas Launches Greenest Energy Tariff
9 August 2007: British Gas has announced it is launching two new green energy tariffs, Zero Carbon, which will be the greenest tariff available on the domestic market and Future Energy. British Gas has launched the tariffs, in response to the increasing demand for green energy products.
Householders signing up to the Zero Carbon tariff will:
• reduce their household energy carbon emissions to zero through Kyoto compliant offset schemes which will meet the new Defra requirements
• help fund a direct increase in investment in renewable energy generated in the UK
• contribute to the new British Gas green fund which will:
o invest in developing new renewable technologies such as wave power
o oversee a programme to help schools in the UK reduce their CO2 emissions
Gearóid Lane, Managing Director British Gas New Energy said,”Our new tariff responds to consumer demand for truly green energy solutions. It is essential that customers have confidence in green energy tariffs and that their credibility is not damaged by tariffs that claim to be green but in reality do not deliver any incremental environmental benefits. Green tariffs are moving from niche to mainstream products and we’re leading the industry by offering a tariff that will do more for the environment than any other product currently available.”
Under the government’s Renewables Obligation (RO), electricity suppliers in the UK are already required to produce an increasing percentage of their electricity through methods such as wind farms which, unlike traditional power plants, produce zero carbon emissions. For 2007/2008 this figure is set at 7.9%.
In a recent report, the National Consumer Council (NCC) raised concerns that some energy suppliers are packaging electricity which is produced under the RO scheme as “green”, yet it delivers no additional environmental benefits. The NCC called on energy suppliers to take steps beyond their legal requirements and offer green energy tariffs that provide genuine additional environmental benefits, in particular CO2 emissions reduction.
British Gas worked with Global Action Plan and The Climate Group’s “We’re in this Together” campaign to develop Zero Carbon which goes further than any other green tariff in meeting these requirements offering consumers the only zero carbon option on the market.
The tariff carries a premium of £84 per year, reflecting the higher cost of producing energy through lower carbon emission schemes.
Virginia Graham, Chair of Global Action Plan, said, “The British Gas Zero Carbon tariff delivers on all three of the essential requirements of a green tariff which are: additionality, transparency and verifiability. As such it is a very welcome new offering in the market. Consumers signing up to the tariff can be confident that they are getting 12 per cent more renewable energy than they would otherwise have got. The carbon emissions from their electricity and gas will also be offset with emissions reductions from projects accredited by the United Nations.”
Zero Carbon is one of the first initiatives launched through the ‘We’re in this Together’ campaign, which was launched in April 07 as an alliance of some of the UK’s biggest brands who are all working to help their customers reduce their impact on the climate.
Dr Steve Howard, CEO of The Climate Group and founder of ‘We’re in this Together’ said, “We’re committed to offering people ways to make a real impact on climate change through Together.com. We’ve worked with British Gas to ensure that Zero Carbon is a genuine step forward in delivering more environmental benefits than any other tariff currently available.”
British Gas’s second green energy tariff, Future Energy, offers an alternative green electricity tariff at a premium of just £20 per year. Customers signing up to this tariff will contribute to a green fund which will provide solar panels and other renewable energy technologies to UK schools. Money from the fund will also be invested in development of future renewable technologies and sources.
To sign up customers can call British Gas on 0845 604 0055 or visit www.britishgas.co.uk
This is wonderful news. The first tariff means that you may elect to offset your entire carbon footprint by paying more for your energy. In addition to the carbon offset, you will also be investing in the future of green energy research. The future tariff will fund alternative energy solutions for the schools in the UK.

New BLM Chief Excludes Public from Environmental Decisions
I guess the administration got tired of all the petitions and entreaties to stop exploiting public lands for oil and gas use. The dying throes of the oil dinosaur will shatter some of the last remaining wild areas in the USA. If there is action to be taken to stop this, NRDC will.
I will keep you posted.
I will keep you posted.
WASHINGTON, DC, August 15, 2007 (ENS) – A decision by the new director of the Bureau of Land Management, BLM, means that potentially harmful projects involving oil and gas exploration, logging and grazing on public lands are no longer subject to a key federal law that protects natural resources, says the Natural Resources Defense Council, NRDC. . . .
The NRDC says Caswell's decision clears the way for 60,000 pound "thumper trucks" in search of oil and gas to crash through sensitive areas, creating tire tracks deeper than many streams and destroying crucial wildlife habitat, without environmental review or opportunity for public comment.

Green Consumer - National Wildlife Magazine - read complete article By Doreen Cubie
Excerpt from the article:
Excerpt from the article:
South Carolina journalist Doreen Cubie wrote about conservation efforts by Minnesota’s Red Lake Band of the Chippewa in the June/July issue. For more information about native plants, visit www.nwf.org/backyard.. . . steps you can take to help reduce your backyard emissions. Here are some possibilities:
Shrink your lawn: Installing a rock garden, for example, will decrease the amount of turf in your yard, making your lawn easier to maintain. Another strategy is to incorporate islands of small native trees and shrubs into the lawn. You can also transform a section of your yard into a native wildflower meadow. By doing so, you’ll be creating habitat for wildlife—something a lawn doesn’t provide. . .
Use ground covers: Many yards have places where it is shady and difficult to grow grass, or where it is inconvenient or even dangerous to mow, such as a steep slope or incline. Native ground covers—low-growing native plants that seldom or never need to be cut—are good alternatives. Several varieties remain evergreen year-round in many areas of the country. . .
Use native grasses: Replacing the traditional lawn in your backyard or side yard with a native bunch grass, such as poverty oak grass, buffalo grass or junegrass, is another option. Bunch grasses grow in clumps, not an unbroken stand of green, so they are more informal looking. But they do not require pesticides or fertilizers to flourish and only need to be cut intermittently.

Fluorescent Lighting Saves Energy
In a traditional (incandescent) light bulb, the resistance of the filament to the electrical current passing through causes the filament to become hot, thus producing light. However, heat is not light, so energy is wasted.
On the other hand, fluorescent lighting uses a tube with electrodes at each end, filled with a gas. A stream of electrons flows from one electrode to the other, exciting gas atoms. The gas atoms must then release photons to return to an unexcited state. The photons hit the phosphor coating of the tube, thus creating visible light. A fluorescent bulb produces less heat, so it is up to four to six times more efficient than a traditional light bulb.
We are going to install fluorescent lighting in our new shed and carport. Inside the house, we have replaced all our light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights. Replacing your incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent tubes is a very easy way to save money and energy.

Ground-Level Ozone Kills
I thought you might be interested in this alert from the Union of Concerned Scientists. I just sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency and I think you should too. They are drafting new air pollution laws but their recommendation for what is an acceptable level of air pollution is way higher than what the agency's own scientists and science advisors consider safe.
The EPA is currently accepting comments on its proposal. Please send a letter today to urge them to protect Americans' health by setting a standard that is based on the best available science. If you go to the website below you can check out the details and send your own message:
Take Action
The newly proposed draft ozone pollution regulations fall short of what EPA scientific experts consider safe. EPA scientists have linked ground-level ozone, a dangerous component of smog, to asthma and other breathing difficulties, chest pain, lung damage, and even premature death. According to the EPA's own analysis, tightening the current standard would significantly reduce ozone-related deaths.
This comes on the heels of a 3-day ozone action alert in Austin, Texas.

Save the Owls and the Old Growth Forests
The Northwest's rare old-growth forests are a national treasure. With nearly all of these ancient forests found on public National Forest land, the public has an obligation to see that they are managed responsibly.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently sponsored a dangerously irresponsible proposal to roll back protections for the Northern Spotted Owl, an endangered species whose numbers are still in decline. The Spotted Owl depends on old-growth forests for survival, but the Draft Recovery Plan intentionally ignores this well-documented research at the request of political leaders.
Please join me in letting the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife know you believe that precious old-growth ecosystems should be awarded the highest protections. We call for a Spotted Owl Recovery Plan that is grounded in solid science, and that will truly bolster the health of our old-growth ecosystems.

Some Good News for Wildlife
I reported in a post Would You Like Some Oil With Those Whales (July 11) that Bush had granted Shell oil drilling rights in the Beaufort Sea off the coast of the Arctic Wildlife Refuge.
Good News: A federal court has temporarily blocked the Shell oil company from drilling exploratory wells this summer off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. So, until the full case can be heard, the court has granted an eleventh-hour reprieve to polar bears and other wildlife, and shown its concern about the impacts of drilling. National Resources Defense Council is gearing up for a full hearing next week in federal court.
As I reported in Death By Sonar (July 24). the U.S. Navy wanted to train with dangerous, mid-frequency sonar during nearly a dozen upcoming exercises off the southern California coast.
Good News: A federal judge blocked the use of the sonar! The court's injunction is preliminary, which means that this fight is far from over. Nevertheless, it is a stunning setback for the Navy.
The one common denominator in both of these wins for Mother Earth was that the legal expertise necessary to get the proper documents in front of a judge in time to stop both activities was provided by the National Resources Defense Council.
Please think about donating to NRDC to ensure there will always be a way to stop these crimes against animals and nature legally, through the courts.

There are walks in more than 600 communities and you may easily find local walks by using the search engine on the website. Sign up as a team captain and begin, today, finding sponsors and participants for this worthy cause.
Why Should You Participate?
Alzheimer's disease affects everyone eventually. Either you or a loved one will develop Alzheimer's disease. About 6 out of 100 people over 65 years and 30 out of 100 of people over 90 years have some form of dementia. Why Should You Participate?
Alzheimer's disease affects how the sufferer behaves, thinks and functions. First, it changes the personality of the person with Alzheimer's disease. Instead of the confident person you know, you are confronted with an anxious, angry and confused individual.
As the disease progresses, your loved one may develop strange behaviors and withdraw from contact with others. What is truly awful is that hallucinations, delusions and paranoia are common. Alzheimer's sufferers may become verbally or physically aggressive or abusive.
Visit the Alzheimer's Association website today. Please sign up as a team captain, sponsor or participant.
The cure you help fund may be your own.

Well, we are halfway there. . . in two places
On Saturday, the House of Representatives passed an energy package that includes a national renewable electricity standard requiring electric utilities to obtain 15 percent or more of power from a combination of energy efficiency and renewable sources—such as the wind and solar power.
The result?

- Energy Bill in the House that contains renewable electricity standard but no fuel economy provision.

When the Lake Goes Dry
Lake Mead, Nevada, July 29, 2007—You can lead them away from water, but you can't make them not drink.
That's the problem at North America's largest artificial reservoir, Lake Mead, where the combination of a seven-year drought and explosive population growth have sent water levels plummeting by a hundred feet (30 meters)—their lowest levels since the 1960s.At Lake Mead National Recreation Area, for instance, a barren landscape has replaced a harbor that once attracted campers and boaters.
The lake—formed on the Colorado River by the Hoover Dam— supplies water to parts of Nevada, Arizona, and southern California.
This is how some lakes and rivers in Texas looked a few months ago. We must conserve water and be realistic in our wishes to live in desserts and other places where water is not a natural occurrence.
