How Much Did the Hardwood Floors Really Cost?

This is an excellent post about the true cost of certain hardwood used for flooring, cabinets and woodwork in homes. Not only does buying Brazilian teakwood, cherry or mahogany woods for your dream home decimate the Brazillian rain forest, but also propagates slave labor. Please read this article and inform yourself about the true price of hardwood floors, cabinets and woodworks.

Brazilian hardwood floors. Can you say “slave labor?” - Click to read blog post

From the post:
Do you have Brazilian teakwood floors in your luxury home? How about Brazilian cherry cabinets? Any Brazilian mahogany items? Well, I certainly hope you are enjoying them. They might have come to you at a huge cost… well beyond what you paid for them. There is a good chance that that those exotic hardwoods were harvested by slave labor. Perhaps they were even harvested by child slave labor. But the cost for these materials goes even beyond its toll on slaves or your pocketbook. On average, your Brazilian teakwood floor eliminated 7.5 acres of irreplaceable Amazonian rain forest.

Endangered : Romantic Relationships

Love is . . .

Love is patient,
love is kind.

It does not envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud.

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil,
but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts,
always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Has your married life become routine? Do you take your husband or wife for granted? Are you certain that being romantic is a total waste of time? Wake up and smell the flowers!

Better yet, pick a bouquet of wildflowers, light a few scented candles, write a love letter and read it aloud to your spouse. Tell them you were blessed the day you met him or her, second only to the day you were married. Share your dreams about growing old together.

What is the catch? You! Make your spouse feel special and loved. Romance is something most of us do not consider except on anniversaries, and many of us cannot even remember the correct date! Do not let romance leave your life. Love is patient, but there is a limit! LOL

Live Earth Carbon Assessment & Footprint Report

Live Earth graphicLive Earth set out to be different. The moment the green team started planning the Live Earth concert for July 7, 2007, they wanted to end up with a “zero net impact” for the concert events.

See how they did in the PDF Carbon Assessment and Footprint Report.

If you are a visually oriented person, take a look at the graphics, like above, of the data in the report at LiveEarth.VisibleStrategies.com.

The only country where recommended limits for waste streams, fuel and electricity were exceeded was in the USA. The venue was the NYC concert, actually held in New Jersey.

Winner: Solar Decathlon Team Deutschland

Technische Universität Darmstadt Solar Decathlon Team Logo

TU Darmstadt’s design for Solar Decathlon 2007 is based on three basic principles, creating a pure and calm architectural appearance.

Architecture
  1. The first is the principle of layers. The floor plan is divided in concentric zones, arranged around a central core like skins of an onion. These layers divide different energetic zones and allow differentiated use of the building depending on daytime and season.

  2. The second principle lies in the construction of a floor platform for furniture and technology. Built as a raised floor, it contains all invisible building technologies and provides connections of all systems, like a plug-and-play system.

  3. Third, the house shall provide ample room on a small footprint and therefore is organized in zones rather than in several rooms. This idea is directly connected with the platform, which can comprise all furniture.
Energy
  • The team focuses on providing high living and thermal comfort using passive systems, such as a highly insulated building envelope, natural shading and innovative materials, such as phase-changing materials for thermal mass.

  • This concept is complemented by building-integrated, highly-efficient active systems, such as a combined reversible heat-pump, and different kinds of building-integrated photovoltaics — highly-efficient monocrystalline cells on the roof, translucent, glass-embedded cells as shading and weather shield over the porch and amorphous silicon modules, which are integrated into the facade louver doors.

Recycle Bike Tube into Huge Rubber Bands

This is a great idea that I saw in Popular Science (November 2007, p. 94). Any parent knows how many bike tubes you replace when they kids start seriously riding and jumping on curbs and going down stairs.

Keep those blown bicycle tubes and when you have five minutes, make huge rubber bands with them. Just cut it into thin rings and use the rings to hold magazines, newspapers or other items together for easy storage and transport.

No Nukes! No Nukes! No Nukes!

Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Brown, Graham Nash and Friends

The nuclear industry just slipped a clause into the energy bill that will provide up to $50 billion in tax subsidies to build new nuclear reactors!

Building nuclear reactors in the 21st century is stupid. Not only are nuclear reactors targets for terrorists, but also the toxic waste from nuclear power generation threatens our health and our planet.

The nuclear option is not the way to go.

Please put your signature to this petition:
America's new energy policy needs to focus on safe and economic fuel sources. Congress must strip the nuclear tax subsidies from the energy bill before they pass it.

$50 billion in loan guarantees is a lot of money—enough to cover financial risk for the big banks who want to get involved. In other words, if something goes wrong, it will be the American taxpayers who foot the bill, not Wall Street.
America's new energy policy needs to focus on safe and economic fuel sources. Congress must strip the nuclear tax subsidies from the energy bill before they pass it.

Keep Environmental Eye on Forest Service

The current administration has been weakening environmental oversight necessary to protect our national forests. They have been promoting logging and cutting protection for wildlife and water resources. Worse, they have done this while keeping citizens out of the loop.

The latest environmental insult is a proposal by the Forest Service to radically change how forest management plans are developed. STOP this rule change before it happens.

If this newly proposed rule goes forward, it would
  • remove all protections for wildlife,
  • encourage more clear cutting,
  • eliminate water quality safeguards, and
  • lock the public out of the planning process for years to come.

Greetings to the Natural World

The People

Today we have gathered and we see that the cycles of life continue. We have been given the duty to live in balance and harmony with each other and all living things. So now, we bring our minds together as one as we give greetings and thanks to each other as people.

Now our minds are one.

The Earth Mother

We are all thankful to our Mother, the Earth, for she gives us all that we need for life. She supports our feet as we walk about upon her. It gives us joy that she continues to care for us as she has from the beginning of time. To our mother, we send greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Waters

We give thanks to all the waters of the world for quenching our thirst and providing us with strength. Water is life. We know its power in many forms-waterfalls and rain, mists and streams, rivers and oceans. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to the spirit of Water.

Now our minds are one.

The Fish

We turn our minds to the all the Fish life in the water. They were instructed to cleanse and purify the water. They also give themselves to us as food. We are grateful that we can still find pure water. So, we turn now to the Fish and send our greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Plants

Now we turn toward the vast fields of Plant life. As far as the eye can see, the Plants grow, working many wonders. They sustain many life forms. With our minds gathered together, we give thanks and look forward to seeing Plant life for many generations to come.

Now our minds are one.

The Food Plants

With one mind, we turn to honor and thank all the Food Plants we harvest from the garden. Since the beginning of time, the grains, vegetables, beans and berries have helped the people survive. Many other living things draw strength from them too. We gather all the Plant Foods together as one and send them a greeting of thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Medicine Herbs

Now we turn to all the Medicine herbs of the world. From the beginning they were instructed to take away sickness. They are always waiting and ready to heal us. We are happy there are still among us those special few who remember how to use these plants for healing. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to the Medicines and to the keepers of the Medicines.

Now our minds are one.

The Animals

We gather our minds together to send greetings and thanks to all the Animal life in the world. They have many things to teach us as people. We are honored by them when they give up their lives so we may use their bodies as food for our people. We see them near our homes and in the deep forests. We are glad they are still here and we hope that it will always be so.

Now our minds are one.

The Trees

We now turn our thoughts to the Trees. The Earth has many families of Trees who have their own instructions and uses. Some provide us with shelter and shade, others with fruit, beauty and other useful things. Many people of the world use a Tree as a symbol of peace and strength. With one mind, we greet and thank the Tree life.

Now our minds are one.

The Birds

We put our minds together as one and thank all the Birds who move and fly about over our heads. The Creator gave them beautiful songs. Each day they remind us to enjoy and appreciate life. The Eagle was chosen to be their leader. To all the Birds-from the smallest to the largest-we send our joyful greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Four Winds

We are all thankful to the powers we know as the Four Winds. We hear their voices in the moving air as they refresh us and purify the air we breathe. They help us to bring the change of seasons. From the four directions they come, bringing us messages and giving us strength. With one mind, we send our greetings and thanks to the Four Winds.

Now our minds are one.

The Thunderers

Now we turn to the west where our grandfathers, the Thunder Beings, live. With lightning and thundering voices, they bring with them the water that renews life. We are thankful that they keep those evil things made by Okwiseres underground. We bring our minds together as one to send greetings and thanks to our Grandfathers, the Thunderers.

Now our minds are one.

The Sun

We now send greetings and thanks to our eldest Brother, the Sun. Each day without fail he travels the sky from east to west, bringing the light of a new day. He is the source of all the fires of life. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to our Brother, the Sun.

Now our minds are one.

Grandmother Moon

We put our minds together to give thanks to our oldest Grandmother, the Moon, who lights the night-time sky. She is the leader of woman all over the world, and she governs the movement of the ocean tides. By her changing face we measure time, and it is the Moon who watches over the arrival of children here on Earth. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to our Grandmother, the Moon.

Now our minds are one.

The Stars

We give thanks to the Stars who are spread across the sky like jewelry. We see them in the night, helping the Moon to light the darkness and bringing dew to the gardens and growing things. When we travel at night, they guide us home. With our minds gathered together as one, we send greetings and thanks to the Stars.

Now our minds are one.

The Enlightened Teachers

We gather our minds to greet and thank the enlightened Teachers who have come to help throughout the ages. When we forget how to live in harmony, they remind us of the way we were instructed to live as people. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to these caring teachers.

Now our minds are one.

The Creator

Now we turn our thoughts to the creator, or Great Spirit, and send greetings and thanks for all the gifts of Creation. Everything we need to live a good life is here on this Mother Earth. For all the love that is still around us, we gather our minds together as one and send our choicest words of greetings and thanks to the Creator.

Now our minds are one.

Closing Words

We have now arrived at the place where we end our words. Of all the things we have named, it was not our intention to leave anything out. If something was forgotten, we leave it to each individual to send such greetings and thanks in their own way.

Now our minds are one.

Earth is Real 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Winner!

Al Gore is sharing the Nobel Peace Prize with the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

They are being recognized . . .
for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.

Ever Wonder What the World Would be
Like if Al Gore Had Become President?

This we know. The earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth.
This we know.

All things are connected like the blood which unites one family.
All things are connected.

Whatever befalls the earth, befalls the Sons of the earth.
Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it.
Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.

Solar Decathlon Heats Up

Visit the Solar Decathlon site and view the work of all the teams. Support these young men and women from all disciplines who have come together to build energy efficient homes.

Of course, they all have solar energy, but you will be amazed at the other technological advances, such as glass walls that can open like doors or stand like walls, modular panels that contain all utilities and can basically be swapped from one area to another, blurring of the indoor/outdoor spaces, and growing green walls and roofs. You will also see recycling of water, wood, steel and glass.

Please take a moment to view the gallery of homes here and then return to Vote for your favorite team! on BP Solar Decathlon Blog. You may want to wait until all the homes are in the gallery, or you can visit the team websites to see all the technical specs and plans. These are not cheap homes, by any means, and most are around 600 sf.

My favorite so far is Kansas! There are two Texas universities in the competition, so you know I am fighting my urge to vote for Kansas. Take a look and you tell me. I think Kansas will be the winner.

Engineering and architectural teams from 20 universities are competing in the Solar Decathlon this year. These teams are designing and building attractive, livable, energy-efficient houses completely powered by the sun. The houses are now being transported, erected and displayed on the National Mall in Washington D.C.

Over 100,000 visitors will tour the houses, which will be open except for an hour or two during October 13–16 and October 18–19 and the entire day Wednesday, October 17. During these times, the houses will be undergoing juried evaluations as part of the competition. Each entry will be judged on 10 criteria including style, innovation and efficiency. The winning team will be announced Friday, October 19 at 2 pm.

In addition to the 20 solar-powered homes, there are educational exhibits, solar energy and energy efficiency workshops, and a group of green-building experts will answer questions on the weekends. For a complete schedule of events, please click visit the BP Solar Decathlon blog.

BP developed the Solar Decathlon blog as part of their sponsorship of this event. On the blog, you may learn about each team, click through to their website, learn about the house they designed, read the blog posts written by the different team members, and find out more information about BP and their energy policies.

The Solar Decathlon is part of the American Solar Energy Society's National Solar Tour. The U.S Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is the primary sponsor of the Solar Decathlon.

Other sponsors of Solar Decathlon include Sprint, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, The American Institute of Architects, The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, The National Association of Home Builders, and U.S. Green Building Council.

PlaySportsTV.com : Sports Instruction for Parents

Now why did they not have this website when I was a soccer mom? I seriously could have used great sports instruction, or ANY sports instruction. My son played soccer from when he was 6 years-old until he was 16 years-old. He played on a few select teams and he is a good player, fast and flexible, but a bit of a show off.

The first year he played soccer we actually had a coach, but mostly the 6 year-olds played mob ball. They would run around and grab the ball from each other and then run like the wind anywhere but the goal post. Usually the mob was so funny, that the parents would just be rolling on the grass laughing.

The second year and third year was about the same, although the field was starting to mean something to them. They loved to tattle if one of them went out of bounds. The fourth year we had a coach, but he was about 17 and had car troubles, women troubles, job troubles, so he did not show up much. Being the soccer mom that I am, I went on the Internet and searched for the rules of soccer, so at least the parents could have an idea of what we were supposed to be doing. Somehow I hit a spoof soccer website and the rules were a joke. Ha-ha. I spent $10 copying all the rules before I realized it.

I will not bore you with a blow by blow of the many trials and tribulations of the soccer league in San Marcos, I am sure it is the same everywhere. You have the parents who do what they are supposed to and then you have the parents who drop their kids off without shin guards or water to drink. The parents would purchase the trophies because our team never won anything. We had the team run around to the song, "We are the Champions" by Queen. They loved it.

Playsportstv.com, sponsor of this post, has 500+ free instructional videos to help the kids learn the key skills in soccer, football or basketball, among others.

Instead of screaming at the sidelines, the parents can actually help develop the skills that their children need to enjoy the game. In fact, there is a definite emphasis on sportsmanship and sports parenting, which is so necessary if we do not want to scar our kids emotionally forever.

There is also a blog on the site so your child can react with experts, find tips and advice, read feature stories about kid sports, and interviews with teen athletes.

A Good Faucet Will Conserve Water

PricePfisterstoreA quick way to change the look of a bathroom, kitchen or utility room is to replace the faucets. If you are thinking about replacing your faucets, first think about water conservation. I am partial to Price Pfister faucets, but many other types of faucets are well made and do not leak. One leak can waste gallons of water.

Visit faucet.com, sponsor of this post, and find the perfect faucet for the perfect world.
